Each year about 15,000 volunteers from across the United States will participate with ASP, providing home repair assistance to about 400-500 families in need. While we strive to make homes warmer, safer, and drier, ASP is also a relational ministry. We encourage our volunteers to take time to get to know the families they are serving. Often the ASP experience serves to enlighten everyone that the differences between us are only perceived--deep down we all want to be loved, to belong, to own something, and to create something worthwhile--no matter where we live, our economic status, education, or ethnic identity. No one walks away from the ASP experience unchanged--not families served, volunteers, or staff.
You can volunteer in the summer when we offer a structured program geared toward high-school aged youth and their accompanying adult leaders. Volunteer groups sign up for a week of service in one of the 25 communities we serve. Groups arrive on Sunday afternoon, put in five days of home repair and relationship building with the families we serve, and depart on Saturday morning.
ASP provides extensive study materials for groups to utilize in preparing for their week of service. Topics for study sessions include Appalachian history and culture, ASP's mission and values, and basic construction skills.
Around September 1 each year, applications for service the following summer are posted on ASP's website. Groups are scheduled on a first-come first-served basis in the order in which applications are received. ASP continues scheduling groups until all spaces are filled-usually on or before November 1.
