About the Community

Why We Work Here

Logan County is one of the poorest counties we serve, with a poverty rate of 24%.  Because of the large number of applications ASP receives for the Logan County area (well over 100 applications each summer) we operate two centers in the county.  The other Logan center is in the town of Chapmanville. The two centers are approximately 30 minutes apart and there are many potential projects close to each center.  We have chosen the center in Man because of its location in the southern/eastern part of the County, the school’s availability throughout the summer, and due to the request of several community members in Logan County.

The people of Logan County have continually been some of the strongest supporters of ASP and have done everything they can to make ASP’s stay in Logan more comfortable.  The County Commissioners even recognized our ASP staff 3 summers ago by creating a day of service in their honor!  Many of our community contacts have strong ties to the Man area and have helped us find families in need within five to ten minutes of the center.

Culture & History

  • Man was the site of the 1972 historic Buffalo Creek Flood.  A coal slurry impoundment dam burst and released approximately 132 million gallons of black water (waste from coal mining) on 16 communities below the dam.  118 people were killed, over 1,000 were injured, and over 4,000 were left homeless.
  • The famous Hatfield-McCoy feud is said to have started in Logan County. The feud is now credited to neighboring Mingo County, which used to be a part of Logan County.
  • The Hatfield-McCoy ATV trail runs down Highway 10 and through the town of Man.  This trail is a busy ATV passage for many tourists and locals.
  • Logan County is home to the “Three-Mile Curve”, reportedly the longest single curve of any river in the world.

Who’s Who in Your Community?

Facility Manager

Ms. Sandra Manning is the principal and facility manager. This will be her third summer working with ASP at Man High School. What she sees of ASP this year will be her impression of us from this point forward and we strive to take good care of her facility.

Ms. Wilma Zigmond is the superintendent of the Logan County schools. This is her second summer as superintendent, and the second year she’s overseen ASP.  Her support of ASP is instrumental in securing any Logan County facilities for future use.

Community Contacts

Shannon Meade is the coordinator for the Logan County Family Resource Network (FRN).  This is a conglomerate that helps to get social service agencies to work together.  At FRN meetings representatives from numerous organizations keep each other updated on relative current events and collaborate to avoid the duplication of services.  Shannon organizes home repair application collection for ASP and is very supportive of our organization.  In addition to distributing our information and collecting and prioritizing the applications, Shannon takes the staff for initial site visits greatly reducing their work load in the first few weeks.  Shannon also helps ASP identify key community members to work with, and buildings for future use.

Pastor Mike Pollard is a long-time ASP supporter.  Formerly the FRN Coordinator, he’s now with the West Virginia University Extension Service.  He always keeps ASP informed about important events taking place in the county.  In the past few years he played an active role in the efforts to save the Man Community Hospital.  Mr. Pollard has been instrumental in getting ASP into the Man area.
