Welcome to Logan County, West Virginia: Man! We’re thrilled you’re joining us for a life-changing summer. When you’re not with us in Appalachia, this group is your place to stay connected to your ASP experience – from before you load the van, until after the last nail is hammered.

Logan County, WV: Man Thanks to all our great volunteers in Logan-Man all of our homes finished up just on schedule. Our families are already enjoying their “Warmer, Safer, Drier” conditions and are thankful for all your service. We appreciate all of you and all you do. We could not do what we do without help from great volunteers like you. Thanks for a great summer!

Logan: Man Week 8 Update Week 8 was a busy week as the staff and volunteers worked to complete all projects. Details about the final steps can be found below.

Code Name: Space Jam
Family Situation: Bernard and his wife, Maggie, live with their two children in a holler surrounded by their whole family.
This week: The crew this week finished the retaining wall. This included digging and setting the brace posts for the wall and installing reinforcement cables with mobile home tie-downs into the hill as well as stacking the railroad-ties. The crew also ran corrugated piping behind the wall and improved the drainage of the property with creative landscaping.
         
Code Name: Bee Bee
Family Situation: Bobby and his wife live together in a small home that needs some serious work. A few years ago, Bobby developed an infection in his ears that required his eardrums to be completely removed, leaving him deaf in both ears. His wife was recently hospitalized but came home late last week and is recovering from a fall.
This week: The crew this week finished repairing the last part of the roof by replacing rotted decking and installing rolled roofing. They also installed guttering between the carport and the house to provide better drainage where the roofs meet.
         
Code Name: Cookie Monster
Family Situation: David lives by himself in a small trailer located right in the middle of his family’s neighborhood. His bad back has made him unable to do work on his house himself. David takes care of his family in the surrounding homes near his, and spends most of his time helping those around him.
This week: This week the crew framed and installed a window in David’s living room. They also finished installing drywall in David’s bedroom and around the front window and door. In addition to painting the new drywall, the crew also painted the ceilings in the back rooms of the house and the new siding in the front of the home
         
Code Name: Doodle
Family Situation: The family in this newly moved trailer is Stephanie, 19, and her boyfriend, 22. They are expecting a baby girl and are hoping to prepare their home for her new arrival in September.
This week: Working as one, the crews this week finished installing drywall in all the rooms of the home and painted all of it. They also finished the bathroom and plumbing for the trailer.
         
Code Name: Huggies
Family Situation: Pat lives with her husband Jimmy and takes care of four of her grandchildren. Her daughter is not available to take care of her children so Pat and Jimmy raise them on their own. The children are 1,2,3, and 4. They are really sweet and enjoy spending time with volunteers.
This week: The crew this week mud, taped and painted the back bedroom and finished the steps out of the back door. They also installed drywall in the first bedroom and painted it as well as laying down a new floor covering in that room.
         
Code Name: Hungry Mungry
Family Situation: The Hungry Mungry family is great. They have four children under the age of nine. The parents are superb and are very appreciative for all our help. The kids really enjoy playing with volunteers.
This week: The crew this week completed the final touches on the room addition and tied the electrical components of the room such as the overhead light and the baseboard heaters to the home.
         
Code Name: Stiltz
Family Situation: Rose and her husband live in this home. Caleb, the three-year-old grandson frequently stays with his grandmother and her two sons come by often as well.
This week: The crew this week dug and set the foundation for the room addition on the home. They also added the finishing touches to the stairs on the new porch as well as securing and adding railings to the stairs up to the front door.
         
Code Name: Sweet Peach
Family Situation: Billie is a new mother. Her son, Bradley, is only seven weeks old. They are now living with her boyfriend’s mother but are really looking forward to finally being able to have a safe place to move into on their own.
This week: The crew this week chased, rewired, and replaced breakers the large room of the home. They also finished replacing the floor coverings in the back room and kitchen. Lastly, the crew put up new panelling in the living room, kitchen, and large room.

Logan: Man Week 7 Update Here’s an update of our homes and families. We had a great Week 7 and are looking forward to Week 8!

Code Name: Cookie Monster
Family Situation: David lives by himself in a small trailer located right in the middle of his family’s neighborhood. His bad back has made him unable to do work on his house himself. David takes care of his family in the surrounding homes near his, and spends most of his time helping those around him.
This week: This week the crew finished and painted the ceiling drywall in the back two bedrooms and hallways. They also added finishing touches to the porch and front door the crew from last week started. In the front bedroom the crew replace a section of the band joist and installed new T1-11 siding and insulation. They also hung and finished drywall. In the living room they framed for and installed a new window.
Next week: Next week we will finish up these projects, particularly adding another coat of paint to the ceilings in the back bedrooms and finishing the drywall work and paint in the living room.

This week: This week the crew continued working on the second safe exit. They installed new stairs and handrails so that the exit can now be accessible. They also finished the vinyl siding and added a layer of flashing over the band joist in some areas. Towards the end of the week they also began working on the pier foundation under the room addition.
Next week: Next week the crew will finish the pier foundation under the room addition. This will entail building and installing the girder as well as setting the posts.
         
Code Name: Sweet Peach
Family Situation: Billie is a new mother. Her son, Bradley, is only seven weeks old. They are now living with her boyfriend’s mother but are really looking forward to finally being able to have a safe place to move into on their own.
This week: This week the crew finished the VCT flooring in the bathroom and put new laminate flooring in the living room and hallway and sheet flooring in the kitchen. They also put baseboards in the kitchen and living room. New drywall was also hung and finished and one of the bedrooms painted. Outside they installed new railings on the front porch and steps.
Next week: Next week we will install two windows. We will also finish the electrical and insulation so that drywall can be hung, finished, and painted. We will also do floor coverings in the master bedroom.
         
Code Name: Space Jam

This week: The two groups this week had an enormous task and did an incredible amount of work accomplishing it. They dug literally tons of dirt from a mountainside in order to build a retaining wall there, clearing out space under a room for a foundation repair. Once all the digging was done, they were able to set posts to support the room for a new foundation.
Next week: Next week the group will still have a lot of work to do, installing a large retaining wall up against the mountain to keep erosion contained.
         
Code Name: Punkin Patch
Family Situation: A dedicated grandmother, Dorsilene, and grandfather, Dallas, live in this home. Their daughters and grandchildren love to stop by and visit often.
This week: The crew finished all the projects this week. They painted the porch ceilings and installed a couple of missing pieces of siding. They complete various finishing projects.
         
Code Name: Doodle
Family Situation: The family in this newly moved trailer is Stephanie, 19, and her boyfriend, 22. They are expecting a baby girl and are hoping to prepare their home for her new arrival in September.
This week: This week we finished both safe exits for the trailer by installing stairs, handrails and spindles. We also installed three tile ceilings inside the trailer in the two bedrooms and the living area. The work crews then began hanging drywall in the rooms where the ceilings were installed.
Next week: Next week we will continue doing the drywall and finishing work on the trailer. We will also be running some of the plumbing and installing a brand new septic tank with a waste aeration unit!
Special tools: Drywall tools, drills, utility knives.

This week: The crew this week finished hanging drywall in the room addition and painted it a beautiful blue. They also laid a new floor covering and installed baseboard and trim around the room.
Next week: Next week we plan to apply the finishing touches on the room addition and complete the electrical wiring.

Family Situation: Pat lives with her husband Jimmy and takes care of four of her grandchildren. Her daughter is not available to take care of her children so Pat and Jimmy raise them on their own. The children are 1,2,3, and 4. They are really sweet and enjoy spending time with volunteers.
This week: The crew this week finished installing drywall in the back bedroom and painted it a beautiful pink. They also strengthened the floor and set down linoleum. Lastly, the crew also replaced underpinning on the outside front of the home.
Next week: Next week we hope to install baseboard in the back bedroom. We also plan to construct a safe second exit in the back of the home. We may also place down extra linoleum in the hallway of the home.

Next week: Next week we hope to install new ceiling tiles in the laundry room of the home. We also plan to replace the old gutter system to provide better drainage for the new roof.

Logan: Man Week 6 Update We’ve been busy in Logan-Man, here’s an update on our current projects. Things are looking great and we’re excited to start another week.

Code Name: Hungry Mungry
Family Situation: The Hungry Mungry family is great. They have four children under the age of nine. The parents are superb and are very appreciative for all our help. The kids really enjoy playing with volunteers.
This week: This week the crews built a second safe exit off the back of the house and moved the back door. They also painted a bedroom and installed baseboard while on of the kids was away at camp as a surprise. In the room addition they finished preparing for the baseboard heater and insulated the walls. They also framed for the closet and hung and finished drywall. They also worked to weatherproof the room addition.
Next week: Next week we will finish the drywall and paint it blue. We will also install new floor coverings.

The crew also framed for and installed two windows in the back bedroom and continued with the drywall work that was started last week. They also installed baseboard in the bathroom. In the kitchen, they began to install new sheet linoleum.
Next week: Next week we will continue installing new floor coverings in the kitchen and back bedroom. We will also install new underpinning.
Future Projects: Future projects include a second safe exit off the back of the house.

This week: The crew this week worked fast and hard to put up a safe second exit in the back of the home. They also were able to reinforce the front steps and coat the roof of the home to protect it from future leaks. Most exciting of all, the crew helped the homeowner to frame and replace his front door.
Next week: Next week, we hope to mud and tape, and then paint the ceiling drywall already installed in the home. We also will put in post caps and the last few spindles on the new porch. Additionally, we plan to finalize the front door by installing a lockset and weatherizing it. Another project we hope to start on this house is the installation of a front window on his home.

Next week: Next week, we plan on putting the final touches on the new porch ceilings and drainage system around the house. We also hope to paint the new porch steps and ceilings to match the house.

This week: The crew this week continued to remove and replace the siding in the front of the house. They also installed flashing under the siding to protect the band joist around the home. Most significantly, the crew this week began on the safe second exit off the back of the house.
Next week: Next week, we hope to complete the siding installation process on the home. We plan to install steps off of the new porch as well. We will also begin building a foundation on the addition off of the home.
         
Code Name: Sweet Peach
Family Situation: Billie is a new mother. Her son, Bradley, is only seven weeks old. They are now living with her boyfriend’s mother but are really looking forward to finally being able to have a safe place to move into on their own.
This week: The double crew this week was able to accomplish a great deal. One crew installed underpinning and vinyl siding on one side of the house, as well as reinforcing the roof with blocking. They also insulated the large room and begin to put down laminate in the living room of the home. Our other crew finished the tiling and molding in the back bedroom. In addition, the crew reinforced the bathroom floor and placed down new vinyl tiling.
Next week: Next week, we hope to begin the process of putting up drywall in one of the large rooms of the home. After completing the reinforcement of the trusses, we will also insulate the eaves of the roof. We plan to finish the floor coverings in the second bedroom and the living room. Lastly, some finishing touches are still needed in the bathroom such as baseboard and replacing appliances and cabinets.

This week: This week we continued removing the old layers of rolled roofing and putting on new synthetic underlayment with rolled roofing on top.
Next week: Next week we will continue to work on the roof and repair a few of the rotted rafters as a result of termite damage.
         
Code Name: Doodle
Family Situation: The family in this newly moved trailer is Stephanie, 19, and her boyfriend, 22. They are expecting a baby girl and are hoping to prepare their home for her new arrival in September.
This week: This week was a big week for the home at Doodle. A subcontracted electrician ran the wire throughout the home while the crew followed behind him insulating the walls to make the home warmer. They also installed three interior doors, as well as new front and back doors! Another crew worked outside finishing underpinning and beginning construction on front and back porches. The progress ASP has made on Doodle is amazing so far and we’re so excited to continue!
Next week: Once the electric is finished, we plan to drywall all of the interior walls and begin laying floor coverings. Additionally, a crew will be outside finishing the porches and stairs.
         
Code Name: Narnia
Family Situation: Shelby is a single mom with two disabled children. James usually stays inside but Garrett loves to help out. Shelby’s niece and nephew are also around often and really enjoy visiting with volunteers.
This week: The crew this week completed work on Narnia by finishing the siding and touching up the paint with a second coat. They also installed window trim around the new windows, as well as guttering. Finally, the crew completed work inside by installing floor covering in one area, as well as baseboard and drywall patches in a few spots.

Logan: Man Week 5 Update Here’s and update of what happened Week 5 and what we’re planning for Week 6. It was a great week and we’re looking forward to another one!

Code Name: Bee Bee
Family Situation: Bobby and his wife live together in a small home that needs some serious work. A few years ago, Bobby developed an infection in his ears that required his eardrums to be completely removed, leaving him deaf in both ears. His wife was recently hospitalized but came home late last week.
This week: This week we began working on the roof. The crew removed the existing old roofing, replacing decking where necessary, and installed new synthetic underlayment, drip edge, and rolled roofing. They also removed and sealed off the exiting chimney. New fascia was also painted and installed and the concrete ramp pad was poured.
Next week: Next week we will continue working on the roof. This will include removing the existing roofing and installing new synthetic underlayment and rolled roofing. Drip edge and gutters will also be installed.
Preferred skill: Roofing experience

Next Week: Next week we plan to build David a safe second exit off the back of his home. This will include a small porch and sturdy steps.

This week: This week the crew worked on the vinyl siding and installed new windows. They also put up new soffit and vents as well as a new metal roof. Inside they got ready for the interior work we plan to start next week. New windows were also installted.
Next week: Next week we will install new underpinning, wiring, insulation, and drywall.
Future Projects: Future projects include repairing the floors, installing floor coverings, and completing other interior finishes. We also hope to install new doors.

Besides this, the crew put up the siding around the room as well as installing two windows. Lastly, the crew placed insulation in all the walls of the room.
Next week: Next week we plan to start building a small porch that will extend off of the trailer. This will provide the family with a second safe exit for their home. Inside we will frame for the closet and another interior wall. We will also finish wiring the addition and install new insulation and drywall. A small plumbing project will be addressed as well.
Future Projects: We will continue with the room addition by finishing the drywall, painting, installing fixtures, and new floor coverings.

Family Situation: Shelby is a single mom with two disabled children. James usually stays inside but Garrett loves to help out. Shelby’s niece and nephew are also around often and really enjoy visiting with volunteers.
This week: The crew this week continued replacing the siding on the trailer. They completed the first coat for the whole trailer as well. Inside the home, the crew reinforced a floor and replaced a subfloor.
Next week: This week we will complete the siding and painting as well as finalizing the floor covering in the front of the trailer. We will also begin to repair the roof and hope to add a roof coat.
Special site concerns: Currently the power is out at this home due to a large storm last week, plan to use all battery operated tools.

This week: The crew this week added new stairs to the front porch. These stairs are specially built to make it easy for Dorsilene to exit and enter her home. They also finished the gutter system.
Next week: Next week we plan to add a roof to protect the new stairs to the front porch and provide a safer exit in bad weather.

Family Situation: Peanut, a middle-aged woman who insists on her nickname, and her husband live in this home. Caleb, the three-year-old grandson frequently stays with his grandmother and her two sons come by often as well.
This week: The crew this week continued to sheath and insulate the outside walls of the home. Thanks to their hard work, two more sides of the home are protected by new vinyl siding.
Next week: Next week we plan to complete the siding on the home. We will start to install soffit as well. Lastly, we hope to begin work and planning for the second safe exit off of the back door of the home.
Special site concerns: We are working with the electrical company and may have some some electrical work come up.

Next week: Next week we plan to focus on repairing the floors of the trailer. We hope to place down new floor coverings throughout the home. Our plan also includes siding one more side of the trailer and patching the underpinning.
