Career Opportunities > Summer Employment > Summer Support Staff Positions

Each year we hire a number of folks to work for us temporarily over the summer, but not as traditional summer staffers.  Those individuals serve as construction consultants, staff liaisons, dump truck drivers, and staff writer/photographers.

Here is a brief description of each role:

  • Staffers-In-Training gain a "preview" of the life of an ASP summer staffer. Each accepted SIT will spend as much as one full week at one of ASP's summer centers rotating through the various staff positions of a center, trying each one on for size. Individuals selected for this program will not be charged any volunteer fees for their time as a SIT, do so voluntarily without pay, and are responsible for getting themselves to and from the ASP center.

To apply, you must have had at least one other volunteer experience with ASP (some exceptions may be possible). You must be at least 18 years old by May 2010 and have graduated from high school by Summer 2009. We want all of our SITs to be interested in and eligible to become full staff members in Summer 2010. If you have a question about whether you are eligible, give us a call at (423) 854-8800.  The deadline to apply as a SIT is July 17, 2009. SIT's are placed on a rolling basis, the earlier we receive your SIT application, the more likely that you will be able to be in the program.  Application

  • Construction Consultants are hired to assist the summer staff in construction management.  Typically a construction consultant will visit each county that they serve (2-5 summer centers depending on availability) once a week and, while in each county, visit several ASP worksites.  They provide advice on construction projects, including offering immediate advice/oversight on projects currently in progress, as well as helping the summer staff develop long-range plans for projects.  They may also be asked to serve as on-site supervisors for various projects.

  • Staff Liaisons basically function as traveling summer staffers.  They must have at least one year of "regular" summer staff experience, be highly self-motivated, and good at encouraging others.  They are expected to travel to different staff locations to help out with any and all odds and ends including making trips to the dump, visiting homes, offering morning devotionals, helping in the kitchen, cleaning the office, and a number of other various tasks.  Job description

  • Dump Truck Drivers spend a lot of time on the road, each day traveling to one of twelve counties before moving on to the next.  In each county that they serve, the dump truck driver will wake up early, visit several worksites to collect construction refuse/debris, repeating the cycle until the dump closes for the day, and finally driving on to the next county around dinnertime.  On each visit the dump truck driver will be assisted by a different summer staffer, so by the end of the summer they've gotten to know many people and have driven several thousand miles.  Job description

  • Chaplains are members of support staff who provide spiritual guidance to summer staffs. This person will help to teach and plan faith and spirituality sessions at staff training, midsummer gathering, and wrap pu. The chaplain will be available over the phone to offer guidance and support to sumer staff members, as well a travel to a number of summer centers to talk with staff, conduct a devotion, and critique Evening Gatherings. The chaplain should be a motivated individual who is committed to enhancing the spiritual aspect of the ASP volunteer and staff experience.  Job description
