Who We Are > Videos > Story

Here's a little of the background story of how our videos came together.  Like many things that happen at ASP, it seems like this project was meant to be.

Sarah Andrews, an award-winning professional journalist, and her husband Travis Hughbanks, an architect and amateur videographer, were living in Boston and had reached a crossroads in their young life where they wanted a change of pace and scenery.  After watching a documentary about Appalachia they searched on the Internet and came across ASP and our call for a writer/photographer and videographer for the summer.  They inquired and submitted their resumes and we rejoiced at our good fortune to find two such talented young people.

Sarah and Travis quit their jobs in Boston and temporarily moved to Johnson City to work for ASP last summer.  Travis shot and edited our videos, often utilizing Sarah’s gifts in storytelling to lay out the ASP story in a cohesive way.  Along with assisting Travis on the side, Sarah also wrote over 40 stories about families, volunteers, and summer staff, while providing us with some impressive photography.

Sarah and Travis are now living in Austin, Texas, where Sarah is handles public relations for Meals on Wheels and More and Travis works at an architecture firm and takes filmmaking classes.  Sarah and Travis had never volunteered with ASP but are now big advocates for our programs and hope to recruit a volunteer group or two from Austin.

Early on in the production of the videos we were challenged to think of some way to have music for our videos without paying royalties for using copywritten material.  On the suggestion of the Home Repair Ministries Department we contacted Jeff Thomas, three-time summer staffer and incredibly talented musician who had provided some music for our 2004 videos, and asked if he might help us again with some original music for our videos.  Jeff, who had missed serving on summer staff and wanted to be involved in some way, offered to donate his time and talent to write and record a score for our videos.  Jeff watched the nearly complete videos and wrote the score, then recruited two other musicians to help him play the pieces.  The score was recorded and engineered at a United Methodist Communications studio in Nashville.

The very talented graphic designer we work with, Scott Jenkins of Great Scott Design, came up with the packaging design for our videos and even donated his services on this project.
