Request ASP Home Repair Assistance
Share

With the help of thousands of volunteers each year, Appalachia Service Project repairs homes free of charge for families in Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, and Tennessee.

We know that times are tough. Jobs are few and far between. And when you have to make hard choices like whether to buy medicine or food for your family, fixing a hole in your roof becomes a low priority.

If you are in need of home repair, you have come to the right place. We want to help make your home warmer, safer, and drier. And give you some financial breathing room to concentrate on more important things, like looking toward a brighter future.

Repair work will be performed by high school volunteers and their adult leaders from church and school groups all over the country. Volunteers work for one week at a time in the spirit of love and commitment to improving our world. If ASP agrees to work on your home, crews of about 7 people at a time will work on your home for anywhere from 1 to 8 weeks, depending on the work.

I submitted my application. Now what?

In early June, the ASP staff visit as many families as possible to determine which homes we will work on.

If the staff visits your home, they will let you know soon whether you will receive home repairs that summer. If they do not visit your home at the beginning of the summer, they might do so before the program ends in early August.

If your home is chosen, the staff will contact you to create an agreement that will detail the repairs ASP will complete. Depending on the work, crews of 5 to 7 people at one time will work on your home for anywhere from 1 to 8 weeks.

If your home is not chosen, you will receive a letter in the mail sometime between June and August.

What can I do to better my chances of receiving home repairs?

While there is no way to guarantee ASP will select your home, there are several things you can do to increase the likelihood of having the staff visit your home.

  • Fill out the Home Repair Application as completely as possible. Give detail about the areas in need of repair (what needs to be done, or what the problem is). Include a phone number if possible- if not your own, then the number of someone who can easily contact you.
  • Give clear, accurate driving directions to your home, starting from a certain town or intersection. Remember that the staff is arriving in the county maybe for the first time, and may have difficulty with unclear or inaccurate directions. If they cannot find your home, they cannot sign an agreement with you for repairs.
  • Reapply every few years. We keep referrals on file for the staff, but as people often move or may find help with repairs from another organization, we typically only keep referrals dated for the current year and the two previous years.
