2011-12 Jonesville Adult Program Hey Everyone! We just wanted to give an update of what has happened at a couple of the homes we are repairing. We’ve added a new home, Bulls, to our list. This weekend, a crew from North Carolina came to volunteer with us. Take a look at what they’ve been up to!

Code Name: Crawdads
Family Situation: The husband and wife of “Crawdads” live together in their home on the county line. The wife has a disability that prevents the husband from being able to work because the wife needs a caretaker. This family has a heat pump that they do not use because their electric bill gets so high due to the lack of insulation in the home. Instead, they use a wood burning stove.
This week: This week, a work crew installed two more new windows at Crawdads. This will make a total of four new windows that were installed. The windows in this home are older, and therefore aren’t very well insulated. By installing these new windows, ASP will be finishing up insulating the home, providing the family with a warmer place to live.

Code Name: Bulls
Family Situation: The homeowner lives with his dog in his one bedroom home. He has recently experienced problems with his electricity, adding to his list of home repair issues he is having. ASP will be able to help this man have a more safe home.
This week: An ASP work crew will be installing bathroom wall tile to act as a tub surround. Also, the work crew will be repairing a section in the hallway that has a soft spot. So, the work crew will have to remove existing ceramic tiles to explore the problem, then put down new ceramic tiles. These repairs will help the homeowner have a more safe home.

2011-12 Jonesville Adult Program Here at Jonesville we’ve had two great work crews come in for the past week. Both crews are from Covenant Presbyterian in Charlotte. They made great projects on two of our homes: Biscuits and Crawdads. Here’s an update of everything that’s happened!

Code Name: Biscuits
Family Situation: The mother and son of “Biscuits” live together in their home. The mother has had two husbands die in the past, one of which was her teenage son’s father. The son’s room is not insulated well. ASP has previously worked on their house in the bathroom.
This week: This week, a volunteer crew continued to insulate around the home. This crew worked in tight spaces under the home, installing rolled insulation. The crew also worked on installing insulation in the back wall by putting up a new exterior wall to hold the siding. As a result, the family will have a much warmer home.

This week: This week, a volunteer crew finished insulating in the ceiling of the home. This was the final area of the ceiling that needed insulation. The crew removed old tin, installed rolled insulation, and put new tin on the roof to prevent any leaks that would’ve happened in the near future. The crew also replaced two windows which were not well insulated.
Next week: Next week, a work crew will replace three more windows which are not insulated well. This will continue to aid in the insulation of the home. The new windows will help the family burn less wood throughout the night.

Jonesville Staff Hey Everyone! We’ve had some great crews come in the past few weeks. So far, we’ve had groups from Louisiana, Indiana, and Georgia. The Louisiana and Indiana groups had fun watching the National Championship game, as well as having a Mardi Gras Parade. The Georgia group enjoyed some local food from restaurants in the area.

We are also making great progress on our projects. Here’s an update of all the work we were able to do last week!

Code Name: Generals
Family Situation: A husband and wife live in their home with their two children as well as two children that they have taken in. The two parents are not able to have jobs due to disability. ASP has done previous work on their home including a room addition. This family is very grateful for the work that ASP has previously done and is excited about the work that is happening.
This week: This week, ASP volunteer crews installed laminate flooring throughout a bedroom, hallway, and living room. The crew also installed trim around the floors.

Code Name: Smokies
Family Situation: An elderly woman lives alone in her home. She is disabled and has floors that are falling in. This makes it unsafe for her to walk around in a good portion of her home. ASP will make her life more safe by repairing the floors in her home.
This week: This week, a work crew replaced a bedroom floor in the home of an elderly woman. The floor was severely falling in and rotten. The group began by removing the old floor. New foundation was then installed, and a floor system was placed on top. The crew finished by installing laminate flooring and trim pieces around the edges of the floor.
Next week: Next week, another floor will be repaired in much the same way. The floor will be removed, more foundation will be added, and a new flooring system will replace the old floor.

Code Name: Biscuits
Family Situation: The mother and son of “Biscuits” live together in their home. The mother has had two husbands die in the past, one of which was her teenage son’s father. The son’s room is not insulated well. ASP has previously worked on their house in the bathroom.
This week: This week at Biscuits, a volunteer work crew began insulating the floors of the home from the crawl space. The crew also continued insulating the walls by installing new walls on the outside. This will continue to help the family reduce the amount of wood they have to use in their stove.

This week: This week at Crawdads, a volunteer work crew will be insulating the ceiling one one side of the home. Most of the ceiling was able to receive blown insulation. Since the one part of the roof needed new tin, we will be rolling in insulation and replacing the old tin with new tin. This will not only allow the family to be warmer but also help to reduce any leaks that would’ve happened in the near future due to an old roof with poor tin.

Code Name: Iron Pigs
Family Situation: An elderly man lives in his trailer with his grown son. The trailer didn’t have a safe exit due to one porch falling down and another porch that needs repairs. ASP will help the family live more safely by installing two new porches onto the trailer.
This week: This week, a crew finished up the remaining work left to be done on the front porch at Iron Pigs. Since we had a snow day last week, the crew did not quite finish up the work that needed to be done on the porch. The crew this week will finish the remaining working including: stairs, decking, and handrails.
Next week: Next week, we still plan to install a 5′×5′ back porch in order to complete a safe second exit for the homeowners.

Code Name: Mud Hens
Family Situation: A husband and wife live together in their home with their daughter. The family’s home has been previously worked on by ASP. The family still has problems with air coming in through the old windows.
This week: This week, a work crew will install siding on the front and one side of the home as well as installing a window and house wrap. The crew will also put a couple more 4×4 foundations under the home. The crew will be installing underpinning as well.

2011-12 Guyan Valley Adult Program What a fun weekend! Messiah College from Grantham, PA just left our center and we miss them already! They were a great group of volunteers who worked well with each other and with our staff. Their group leader, Victoria Tice, was a summer staffer for ASP last summer! So this group knew what to expect and was really supportive of ASP’s mission.
Here’s some of the work that Messiah’s 3 work crews accomplished this weekend:

Code Name: Monkey’s Eyebrow
Family Situation: This homeowner is a loving mom that is doing the best she can to make a safe environment for her children. Social Services told her that her home was not a safe environment for her children to be living in and, in order for her to keep her children, the home needs to be repaired. with ASP’s help, the homeowner hopes to make her home a safe living environment for her children to grow up in.
This week: This house was double-crewed this weekend. One group worked inside and was able to use the Hopper to make the walls look even coated before painting! Then they applied the first coat of paint in the bedroom, kitchen, living room, and bathroom. The outside crew finished building the framework for the underpinning and started installing the sheet metal!
Next week: All that is left at this house is to finish painting 4 rooms and finish installing the rest of the underpinning! The next crew could potentially finish this work and then we can sign off on this home! Fingers crossed!

Code Name: Walla Walla
Family Situation: At this home, there is a young married couple who are raising two daughters- ages seven and one. The mother works every day and the father is disabled and incapable of going to work. Their trailer is in need of both interior and exterior work.
This week: The crew this week FINISHED THE UNDERPINNING! They installed the sheet metal, installed 10 vents, and created an access door! Nicely done! Now this home is warmer!

Thank you guys for such a great weekend! We really hope to see you come back next year!
Now it’s time to get ready for Virginia Tech! We’re so excited!

Smiling,

2011-12 Guyan Valley Adult Program To kick-off the new year in Guyan Valley we hosted Staff Alumni Weekend! A group of ASP Staffers, former and present, came together and worked with the Guyan Valley Staff. Also, we very much enjoyed our group from Maryland whose group leader is an ASP Staffer as well! Both groups and the staff came together while eating meals, playing games, and having our share circle. It was a fun and relaxed weekend to say the least!
Here are some of the homes that the groups worked on!

Social Services told her that her home was not a safe environment for her children to be living in and, in order for her to keep her children, the home needs to be repaired. with ASP’s help, the homeowner hopes to make her home a safe living environment for her children to grow up in.
This week: The group worked on re-tiling the inside of the bathroom. Finishing drywall and painting some of the walls. And started to measure and cut boards for the framework of the underpinning.
Next week: The work crew next week will be finishing the drywall and painting on the inside. Also, they will be finishing the framework for the underpinning and then installing and venting the actual underpinning.

Code Name: Walla Walla
Family Situation: At this home, there is a young married couple who are raising two daughters- ages seven and four. The mother works every day and the father is disabled and incapable of going to work. Their trailer is in need of both interior and exterior work.
This week: This home was double-crewed this weekend. One group worked on the interior of the trailer- replacing the bathroom floor and installing vinyl flooring. The other crew worked on the exterior of the trailer, building a steps and a handrail for the front porch and also started the framework for the underpinning.
Next week: Our next group of volunteers will be finishing the framework for the underpinning and then installing it!
Future Projects: We are looking into fixing the back door to make the safe second exit even safer!

Code Name: Yeehaw Junction
Family Situation: The father used to work in coal mine but is now disabled and is not able to work anymore. His wife battled cancer years ago and has just recently come home after being in rehab for surgery that she undergone on her leg. Their daughter lives there, too, but is away at work for most of the time.
This week: The work crew removed the entire front porch and steps. Then they were able to set the posts, start the framework, and measure/cut the stringers for the steps.
Next Week: The next group will be working on finishing the front porch.
Future Projects: The daughter’s bedroom floor will be removed and replaced with laminate flooring.

We had such a great time with these crews!
SO excited for the next round of volunteers from MESSIAH COLLEGE to get here!

Doug Wood It is with great sadness on this Christmas Day that I share the news of the passing of good friend Bertis Baker of Krypton, Kentucky. Bert died on October 18 in the home he loved so much. I spoke with his family tonight and expressed the condolences of the ASP team that worked on his house as well as those from our church. If anyone I have ever met was ready to meet the Lord face-to-face it was Bert. I suspect he is preaching a Christmas Day sermon in Heaven today. Please keep his family in your prayers.

I know Bert touched many lives of the crews that worked on his house over the past few years. I know for a fact that the love shared with him by the many youth and adults who came in contact with him was very important in his life. The work done in the final week of the past summer made him so very proud and he was convinced his winter was going to be warmer, safer and dryer. Thank you to all who worked so hard to make Bert’s life better.

Jonesville 2011 Fall Week 26

Code Name: Geoducks
We finished this project several weeks ago, but I wanted to make an update that I hope those who worked here will find. We went out to the site a few weeks ago to collect the extra supplies and trash from the site, and Sonjha was not home, though her vehicle was present. We thought nothing of it, and collected the materials and left. Today, we went back to sign off on the project, and Sonjha told us that she had been at the hospital when we came before. The ambulance had come to pick her up, and they had to use the gurney to get her out of the house. If it hadn’t been for the wheelchair ramp she may not have made it. Who knows, but y’all very well may have just saved Sonjha’s life!

Code Name: Boll Weevils
Family Situation: In this home there is a single man. In his early 50’s. He has never been married and he does not work. He is mentally handicapped. He takes care of his 3 dogs who have become his family. He lives in a concrete house that has no insulation. He also has no heat, and no hot water.
This week: We completed the plumbing, including hot water, in the house. As of this coming Monday, the water heater will be powered up, and David will officially have hot water in his house for the first time.

Code Name: Gorlocks
Family Situation: In this household there is a mom and her husband. They have 4 kids, 1 boy and 3 girls. The mom grew up in this house and could not bear to let it go. She is a wonderful stay at home mom. Her 2 youngest girls are not in school yet. Her 2 oldest are in first grade. The husband is disabled and also stays at home. They have 3 dogs and a pony.
This week: Today we finished the room addition. It looks wonderful! We will have pictures up from the last day of work soon. The group did an amazing job on the closet, and the girls will be moving in soon. The room felt surprisingly warm; it seems the wood stove is circulating air better than we expected. We intend to do a little more work on other areas of the house in January.

Jonesville 2011 Fall Week 22 Hey y’all. We have been so busy here at Jonesville for the fall season! We greatly apologize for all the late updates.

This fall we have been able to work on a total of 14 houses! We are hoping we can complete them all by Christmas.

Poca Dot: At this house there is a grandmother, her son, and his daughter. They have many dogs and cats and they love them all! We have done lots of work there this fall. We have completed a brand new roof, back porch and roof,a kitchen ceiling done with ceiling tiles and new ceramic tile on the floor, we drywalled 2 bedroom ceilings and laminated 2 bedroom floors, and living room ceiling done with drywall and floor and currently working on the second part of her living room by fixing the hardwood floor that is currently there. We also made a spare bedroom into a dining room for the family to use.

Banana Slugs: At this house there is a single woman living with her son. Her husband unfortunately passed on a few years back so its just the 2 of them with their 4 lovely dogs. At this house we completed fixing her porch and relaid a new hallway floor down. We replaced the subfloor and laid laminate flooring down. We also fixed the leaky bathtub and laid VC tile down in the bathroom. Our wonderful volunteers chipped in and bought her a new stove! We redid the roof on the addition and fixed the ceiling in there with drywall also. We also laid new floor covering in her kitchen.

Fighting Okra: At this house there is a large family. A mother and father and their 3 girls and the oldest girls husband. They have 9 dogs and are very nice people. We completed doing 2 bedroom ceilings one with drywall and the other with ceiling tiles. We redid the bathroom floor with ceramic tile and also replaced the living room ceiling with ceiling tiles also.

Bambis: At this house there is a mother and father who are both very young and their 2 wonderful children, ages 5 and 4. We build a 10×12 room addition so the young boy could have his own room. We also reinstalled a new back porch for them and installed a door to go out the back. The room addition looks wonderful! He wanted his room to be bright green so we painted it “Green Gone Wild” He loves it and so does the family!

Fighting Pickles: This was a wonderful lady to work for. She lived in Lee Co. her whole life. She moved to PA when she was diagnosed with cancer but shortly after treatment moved home. She lives in the same holler as the rest of her family. At this house we did a little bit of foundation work. We resupported her floors by adding new girders and new support beams all through the house.

Honkers: A family of 3 lives here. A mother and her husband and her son. He is 24 and is diabled. We were able to complete a new hallway floor, insulated underneath the trailer, and insulated all the exterior walls. They were wonderful to work for the volunteers loved them and all their stories.

Fighting Artichoke: We did not work here long, but we did great work here. It is a single woman living in a trailer by herself. Her sister and her 2 sons are around a lot though. We were able to fix her front porch and build her a back porch for a safe second exit. We also underpinned all around the trailer. This will keep more heat in and less critters out.

Billikens: For those who have worked here, you know what I mean when I say what a great family. It is a young mother and father with their 2 kids, ages 6 and 3. They have been great to us. We were able to redo the plumbing in their kitchen and laid a new floor with ceramic tile down. We also gave them new cabinets and a new kitchen sink. Currently we are working on the bathroom floor. We also laid ceramic tile down in the hall and plan to lay it down in the bathroom also. We installed new tub surround and fixed the leaks in her bathroom sink and toilet. We dug a drainage ditch so the water would avoid their house.

Boll Weevils: This is a middle aged man in his 50’s living by himself in a concrete house. He is disabled but does the best he can. We replaced the front part on his roof, and also build new walls around the exterior walls to insulate. Currently, he has new walls with insulation, in them to keep him warm. We also would like to install a hot water heater since he has never had hot water.

Ham Fighters: Since we just started working there we have not gotten to know the family too well yet. There is a mother and father and their 2 girls. The mother has stage 4 kidney failure. We were able to fix the foundation on the house along with fixing their back porch. We also installed gutters so they wont have standing water around the house anymore.

Battling Bathers: This is a family of just a mother and her 18 year old son. The mom’s boyfriend currently is living with them also. The mother has liver failure so the son does a good job of taking care of her. We were able to replace a new kitchen floor and bathroom floor. This was definitely a project. We also had to replumb the bathroom and kitchen so the water would run correctly. They are going to be laying new ceramic tile in both kitchen and the bathroom. We won’t have time to do much more work but we plan to work on the house again in the spring time.

Gorlocks: With 3 girls and a boy these parents have their work cut out for them. They are wonderful people just getting by. The father is disabled and can no longer work due to a hunting accident and the wife does a good job of taking care of him and the kids. We built a new front porch and porch roof, did a roof coat to protect the roof from leaking and currently are building a room addition for the 3 girls so they do not have to share a room with their brother anymore. It is a 10×24 room! We also build a back porch and installed a door for a safe second exit.

Geoducks: This house is a single woman with her son. The woman living there is wonderful, she has a heart condition that puts her in and out of the hospital a lot. We built a wheel chair ramp so it would be easier to help her in and out when an ambulance comes. We also insulated the floors to make it warmer for her in the winter.

Our last house!
Awesome Blossoms: We have only worked there for a week but we plan to complete a new 5×5 front and back porch for a single man. He is elderly but wonderful to work for. He is lonely and needs company. Thus far, he has been a pleasure to work for and the volunteers love him!

Like I said before, we are so sorry for all the delays. All the volunteers that we have had have been wonderful! We got a lot accomplished in a short amount of time. We plan to work just as hard in the spring to help out as many families as possible! Thank you for all your dedication and hard work. We hope that all of you enjoyed your experience and hope to see you back again! Have a safe and wonderful holiday season! GOD BLESS!!

2011-12 Guyan Valley Adult Program Hopeulikit’s sister just called and thanked us for the wheel chair ramp. She said prior to us building the ramp, it took a half hour to get the homeowner into the ambulance. With the help of the ramp that the volunteers worked so hard on, the homeowner was able to get from the front door to the ambulance in just 4 minutes! Way to go volunteers!
