Appalachia Service Project is a Christian, non-profit home repair organization that utilizes volunteers to perform free home repair and replacement for families living in substandard housing or families affected by a disaster. Over the summer, ASP hires college-aged young adults for our Summer Staff internship, managing the volunteers and home repair projects – read below to learn how you may be a good fit to apply for the internship!
- You have a heart and passion for service – ASP provides one of the most rewarding structured service opportunities in the nation, bringing thousands of volunteers from around the country to rural Central Appalachia to repair homes for low-income families.
- You have a desire to work in a Christian environment – ASP is a Christian ministry, open to all people. We believe that each person is a child of God imbued with dignity and worth, and we believe God calls people to serve others as volunteer partners in ministry and we will encourage their growth in faith as they answer this call. One requirement of the Summer Staff Internship is to be a “spiritual leader” – we are looking for young adults who are comfortable sharing their story and guiding youth and adults in their call to service.
- Where others see problems, you see solutions – The Summer Staff Internship requires critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Whether it is problem solving how to repair a roof with many different valleys or thinking about how to best approach a sensitive situation, the skills that our Summer Staffers learn are invaluable. Problem solving occurs in every industry and in every job, and being a Summer Staffer with ASP allows you to really build those skills!
- You like meeting new people and making friends – ASP is a relationship ministry and provides countless opportunities to encounter people who come from all walks of life. Summer Staffers get to work alongside other college students from all over and build friendships that span time and distance. Returning staff members get to see their friends again and again each summer, often citing it as one of the main reasons they choose to work for ASP time and time again.
- You are looking to learn and grow while also making an impact this summer – Since 1969, we’ve made homes warmer, safer, and drier for families and provided transformational service experiences for volunteers. Each year, more than 15,000 volunteers serve with ASP, providing critical repairs for more than 350 families. You can be a part of this huge transformation, while learning more about yourself professionally and personally!
